The First Time is Always the Hardest

September 5: A few hours ago, anxious as heck, I sat in the parking lot at my local gym, waiting. On a whim I signed up for a membership last week with some friends and tonight was my first time visiting said gym. We were taking a 30 minute #HIIT class and while I was excited to try it, I was crippled with fear and anxiety. I’m the heaviest I’ve ever been. My belly gets in the way of everything. I’m not bendy in any way. Like at all! And, I have hip issues. I hate being watched.  My anxiety made me get to the gym 40 minutes early. Scared I’d be late. Scared to show up after the class started. Everyone looking at me. So I sat in the car waiting. Fretting. Beating myself up for letting myself “go” all these years. If I had stayed in shape, I wouldn’t be scared I’d throw up in front of everyone. I fretted until the very last minute before the class started. But knowing I had a friend waiting and counting on me made me move my butt out of that car. Inside the gym, I swipe my pass and I can

Shopping Local: The Scrunchie Edition

I remember back in the day, like we're talking 1991, when fluorescent pink and green scrunchies were soooo cool. Then one day they became uncool, and my pre-teenage self took a vow to never be caught dead wearing another scrunchie ever again for as long as I lived.

But like all things and fads in life, trends get recycled and updated with a bit of a modern twist. And since I'm the kind of mom who sports leggings and a messy bun almost daily, I definitely feel like it's time to amp up my bun game.

I haven't bought any of these yet (not have I been paid to promote them - in fact these sellers have no clue who I am) but I've had my eye on them for awhile....maybe I'll treat myself, it is Mother's Day tomorrow after all right?

Knot Your Average Scrunchie is an Ancaster, Ontario (Canada) based shop. The grand-daughter and grandmother duo create high quality scrunchies out of the most fabulous fabrics. This oversized cheetah satin is my fave! AND it's under $10 (click here to see). Check out their super cute Instagram page too: @knot.youraveragescrunchie.

Blush Scrunchies is based out of Toronto, Ontario (Canada) and their secret sauce is lengthened fabric for a more full looking scrunchie. I am so in it. The fuller the better IMOP. Also can I just say that I'm loving this red "Sangria Satin" scrunchie?! Check it out here (link).

Soooo you wanna go bigger eh? Well my Google search for "oversized scrunchies" led me this awesome Vancouver, British Columbia based shop, Charlie Paisley. And friends, I think I found the Mecca of all hair accessories. Handmade? Check! Canadian made? Check! Oversized and plush? Check! Check! Naturally derived and biodegradable fabric? Check! Vintage fabrics? Check!

I absolutely love the story of how they came to be, and their mission is quite lovely as well. Read all about it here.
